Announcing the Nursing and Midwifery Education Scholarship!
In keeping with Samsortya’s dedication to the empowerment of women and girls through local initiatives, the Afghanistan Samsortya team is proud to announce an ongoing scholarship program to fund young women’s education in nursing and midwifery.
During her most recent visit to Samsortya’s plant nursery sites in Kabul and Jalalabad, Executive Director Mariam Raqib had the opportunity to connect with the local community on the most pressing issues facing women and girls. Education was chief among the cited challenges to female social progress in Afghanistan.
We established the Nursing and Midwifery Education Scholarship with the aim of providing young Afghan women with practical, marketable skills that allow them to make a sustainable living while materially contributing to their own communities. Afghanistan consistently ranks in UNICEF studies as the most dangerous place in the world to be pregnant, with over half of premature deaths of women 15-49 stemming from pregnancy and childbirth complications. The students that have joined the nursing and midwifery cohort have expressed a desire to be a resource to the other young women in their communities. With the help of directed contributions from Samsortya’s longtime supporters, we have managed to secure funding for five young women in Kabul and Jalalabad to attend an accredited two- to four-year nursing or midwifery course, as well financial support for travel and school materials.
Each supporter contribution of $350 is sufficient to fund one young woman’s annual tuition for their nursing or midwife education. We invite those who have followed our work in Afghan communities to further help us in revitalizing the lives of young women and their families through the gift of education.
